A Library with a Difference
30th May 2019
One of the most important parts of fostering a positive reading culture is having an inspiring space for children's imaginations to run wild when they curl up with their favourite books.
Usborne Organiser Tina McGrane describes how the combination of an enterprising headmaster, an old double-decker bus and a whole lot of community spirit helped create an extra special library for the students of Mattishall Primary School to enjoy.
"Last year, Matthishall Primary School's headteacher acquired an old Routemaster bus. The renovation was a real community effort. Passionate parents and members of staff undertook the work themselves, stripping the dilapidated interior and transforming it into a sanctuary for reading.
The bus now boasts a full library, a cosy reading nook and a charming woodland-themed reading area. A local business also kindly got involved, painting a beautiful mural on the outside. The grand opening took place in April, to the delight of all involved!
In order to achieve this goal, the school worked hard alongside Usborne books to hold a sponsored reading event over the February half term in the run up to World Book Day. The students raised £620, which is quite an achievement for a little school in rural Norfolk!
In addition to this the school also held a book fair, raising a further £130. Combined with Usborne's contribution from the Community Book Pledge, they had more than £1,160 to spend on a wealth of wonderful books. Both staff and students had a great time browing the catalogue choosing books for their new library.
As their Usborne representative, I am already looking forward to World Book Day 2020 when we have even more reading events scheduled!
It was a true collaborative effort to create such an exciting reading space. The amount raised for such a fantastic cause - to promote a love of reading for pleasure - is a wonderful achievement."
Thank you for sharing this inspiring story with us, Tina! We hope the students of Matthishall Primary continue to enjoy their beautiful new library.
