World Book Day 2019 - Our European Winners!

20th May 2019

Every World Book Day, our Organisers hold hundreds of events across the season to share a love of reading with as many children as possible.

As part of our expanded coverage of World Book Day in Europe in 2019, we launched an exciting schools prize draw competition exclusively for all non-UK schools to make this year's celebrations extra special.

To enter the competition, schools simply needed to book a World Book Day event with their Usborne Organiser. We had hundreds of schools enter and, a whole host of fantastic events later, we are thrilled to announce our winners:

The winner of our first prize of £250 of Usborne Books of their choice is:

  • Britannica International School, Budapest, who held an event with their Usborne Organiser, Maria Lazane. Congratulations!

And our runners up:

  • Cambridge House Secondary School, who held an event with their Usborne Organiser, Encarna Chiva.

  • Complex of Silesian International Schools, who held an event with their Usborne Organiser, Marta Rokicka.

  • Il Quadrifoglio, who held an event with their Usborne Organiser, Chiara Rosignoli.

  • Marymount Institute, who held an event with their Usborne Organiser, Anna Faulkner.

Congratulations! We hope you enjoy your £100 of free Usborne Books of your choice.

Usborne Organiser, Maria Lazane, tells us why she loved working with the Britannica International School, Budapest, in the run up to World Book Day:

"The whole school - teachers, students and parents - welcomed the book fair with open arms. It's so good to see Usborne books on the library's shelves, and it always makes me very happy to see children leaving with books in their hands at the end of their library session. Usborne books truly make a difference to their lives!"

Mrs Kerekes, the librarian of the Britannica International School, Budapest, said: "We have held regular Usborne Book Fairs with Maria since 2012. She manages the orders and brings tonnes of books for us to browse, so it's very easy for us to work with her!

Our school library now has a great collection from all the free books we have received; a few of this year's favourites are Artificial Intelligence, Lift-the-Flap Engineering and Managing Your Money.

This year's World Book Day was celebrated with lots of different activities and competitions - quite a few of the prizes were Usborne books! As soon as I heard that our school had won this year's schools prize draw competition I couldn't wait to spread the news across the school. We had our wishlist ready, so it wasn't difficult to decide which books we wanted! We are so happy about all the new books we have received for our library, and I know they will be enjoyed by the students."

Usborne Organiser, Anna Faulkner, who held a very successful event with Marymount Institute, tells us why this competition was such a great incentive for EU Organisers:

"When I first got in contact with the school in September, it took a long time to convince the head teacher to work with me. When I eventually persuaded him to organise a meeting, I told him about the free books available for the school and his attitude completely changed. By December we had a book fair scheduled, and we soon planned another event for World Book Day. The school got over 600 Euros of free books as their allocation, and were delighted to be announced as runners-up in the schools prize draw competition. Thanks to perseverance and this great tool from Head Office, we now have a brilliant working relationship. They've also asked me to organise events with the secondary school!"
