Born for Brilliant Books

School of the Term

2nd March 2020

We are delighted to announce that Totley All Saints Primary are the winners of our School of the Term award for Spring Term One!

Celebrated six times a year, School of the Term is a half-termly award that is given to one UK or EU school that has had a fantastic event with an Usborne Organiser. We are very keen to showcase the amazing things that schools have achieved through working with their Usborne Organiser - it isn't just about the amount of money raised, but the difference made to the positive reading culture of that school.

Nominated by Usborne Organiser, Cheryl Randle, we chose Totley All Saints Primary because of their passion and enthusiasm for books, and their inclusive approach to getting the whole community reading.

Cheryl explains why she feels the school deserves this recognition: "The school's PTA were very enthusiastic about raising money for new books and they decided to hold a Ready Steady...Read! sponsored event over the course of one week. I kickstarted the event with a launch assembly, which was met with incredible enthusiasm from the children, and it was clear just how much they wanted to engage with their reading challenge. I showed them a range of the wonderful Usborne books that they could have in their library, and the children hung on every word. It was clear that they loved books and were desperate to get going with raising money for more!

After the event the children eagerly got fundraising and raised a whopping £1,310! I was delighted to tell them their total would now include £786 of extra books from Usborne and their grand total to spend was £2,096! They were over the moon with this as the money was going to be used to revamp the book stock in their library. It was a far higher amount than any of us had imagined! The staff and children were delighted when the delivery arrived and couldn't wait to see all the brand new books. The PTA and the staff organised a special assembly to present the books that they had chosen.

The school now do a 'Family Read Session' in their open library hour after school on a Monday to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy the new books that the children fundraised for. Parents, siblings and friends are all invited into the library with the pupils to read and choose new books to borrow. We also hold 'reading in the woodland' sessions where each class invites their parents up to the woodland workshop area and we read together and toast marshmallows on the fire pit.

I nominated Totley All Saints Primary, because their enthusiasm for promoting reading is enormous! The PTA and the staff fully supported the fundraiser and kept the momentum going during the event. It's clear just how passionate about reading the children are, and they absolutely LOVE their new books. They were a pleasure to work with."

Headteacher, Mrs Brown, said "The hard working PTA at Totley All Saints Primary School arranged for us to take part in the Ready, Steady...Read! Challenge with Usborne Books at Home. All the children were really enthusiastic and rose to the challenge! Altogether, including the additional books from Usborne (60%), the school had an amazing £2,096 total to spend on new books! Several Christmases came at once! Our staff had a lovely time picking books for their classes and the school library. It was a great fundraising idea that engaged the children in reading at home and in school, and emphasised just how often we are reading every day."

Totley All Saints PTA say "The new books have been so amazing and are being used every day in the classrooms and in the library".

Congratulations, Totley All Saints Primary! We loved hearing about your incredible culture of reading for pleasure and your amazing Family Read Sessions that we're sure make a big difference to the whole of your local community.
