World Book Day 2018 - Our Secondary School Winner!
11th May 2018
Every World Book Day, our Organisers hold hundreds of events in the UK and Europe to celebrate and share a love of reading with as many children as possible.
To make this World Book Day extra special, we held a competition where any secondary school that held an event with one of our Organisers, could win a class set of one of our modern classics books.
Hundreds of schools entered, and we are thrilled to announce that Dedworth Middle School won!
Usborne Organiser, Julie Fuller, tells us about how she celebrated World Book Day with them:
"I was really excited to hold a book fair with Dedworth Middle School to celebrate World Book Day. I always love the buzz of a book fair and the excitement that students have of browsing the huge range of fiction and non fiction books on offer. I love being able to help each student to find the book that best suits their interests and preferences.
The event was held on the 27th February, and I was lucky enough to have a full day showcasing Usborne's brilliant books to all the students. The students came in class by class with their teachers and were definitely drawn in by all Usborne's new and exciting fiction titles. Where the World Ends and It Only Happens in the Movies were some of the most popular titles - so popular in fact, that amongst other titles, I sold out of all my older fiction! It was fantastic to see such an enthusiasm for fiction and reading in the school. The range of non-fiction titles also proved very popular.
Thanks to the enthusiasm of teachers and students, the school earned £210 of free books to pick for their classrooms and library, and have the full range of Usborne titles to select from. I hope they get many years of enjoyment out of those extra free books.
The school chose to have a class set of Mockingbird as their prize. It's a fantastic novel about an autistic girl called Caitlin whose brother dies in a school shooting. Caitlin comes across the word 'closure' in a dictionary and decides that this is what she needs to find, in order to come to terms with the loss of her brother, and to make sense of her new world without him in it. I hope that the students really enjoy this novel and the fantastic protagonist, Caitlin. "
On winning the books, the school said, "This is delightful news thank you! Very pleasing to hear."
