Book Review - What's A Girl Gotta Do?

18th June 2018

What's A Girl Gotta Do? is the third title in Holly Bourne's brilliant Spinster Club Series, and this time it's Lottie's turn to take the lead.

After an incident involving two van men, Lottie is determined to do more to fight back at the blatant sexism that she sees all around her. With the help of her best friends Evie and Amber, as well as their college FemSoc, she starts her #Vagilante campaign, and vows to call out every sexist incident she sees for one month.

But her #Vagilante campaign is not without difficulties. From the rugby players determined to disrupt her campaign, to the trouble caused by calling out teachers on the sexism in their subjects, to her parents wanting her to focus on her uni application to Cambridge instead, every turn seems to bring up another issue for Lottie.

And then there's Will. The arrogant film studies student that Lottie has recruited to document her campaign, that refuses to acknowledge the merit of what she's doing. The last thing Lottie wants to do is fall for someone like Will, but the more time she spends with him, the more time she spends thinking about him.

Lottie knows that what she's doing is important, but as she becomes more and more consumed in her fight to call out sexism, she starts to lose control of everything else around her. Can she balance her #Vagilante campaign with the rest of her life, or will she lose everything else in her desperation to keep up the fight?

What's A Girl Gotta Do? is something that every teenager should add to their to-be-read list. It's empowering, inspiring and utterly captivating, and we hope that it will encourage many more #Vagilante campaigns around the world.
