Making Sweets

The latest mouth-watering book to be added to the Usborne cookery range is April new title: Making Sweets. Each recipe looks truly delicious, but we wanted to find out how easy it is for children to make the sweets in this book (with a little adult guidance, of course). So here's our tester, Laura Stone's verdict on the book and what daughters Ava, six, and Harper, three, thought of it too:

"Usborne's latest cookery book is a glorious one. As almost every mother who bakes knows, as soon as a mixing bowl makes its appearance in the kitchen, so do the children! My girls hover regularly, both desperate to lick out a bowl or chocolate covered whisk.

I wanted to harness the moment and their enthusiasm and so "kidscookmondays" was born. For the last six months, we’ve baked or cooked every Monday afternoon.

My daughters' happiness was complete this week with the arrival of Making Sweets.  The thought of actually being able to make their very own sweets sent their excitement levels sky-high! The brightly coloured book is full of wonderful photographs of sweet treats, complete with easy to follow illustrated recipes.

The girls chose to make the chocolate party spoons, stripy lollipops and pink & white hearts. Ava aged six, enjoyed reading the recipes out to me, while little Harper, at three years old happily pointed out which illustrated step was next in the recipe.

A grown up is needed with almost all the recipes as some of them can be a little tricky for tiny hands. Our white chocolate hearts needed a little 'keeping within the lines' guidance, as did the insertion of lolly sticks into our boiled sweet lollipops. We also did a lot of melting chocolate!

The recipes we tried were fairly quick to complete, which held the girls' attention and the book offers a wide variety of easy and slightly more complex sweets to try.

At a very affordable £9.99, Making Sweets is an ideal birthday present or gift for any young children who enjoy being in the kitchen, or any parent who'd like to give making sweets a go over the upcoming Easter hols!

I asked Ava to write about the book and below is what she said:

"My favourite sweets were the pink and white hearts. The recipes were easy and hard. My sister and I bake every Monday. I love kids cook Mondays." By Ava Stone, age 6.
